Deerland Fosters New Delivery Options with Highly Soluble Form of DE111® Probiotic

Deerland Enzymes & Probiotics has introduced a new, more soluble form of its hardy probiotic strain DE111®. This form of the spore-producing probiotic Bacillus subtilis, DE111® HS (Highly Soluble), makes it easier to introduce probiotics into high-growth natural product markets like hot beverages, functional drinks, and nutritional supplement gummies.

“DE111’s high tolerance of heat and pH extremes has made it a great strain for natural products manufacturers. But we needed to improve its suitability for tricky delivery systems requiring solubility,” explains Deerland Enzymes & Probiotics vice president of science and technology, Dr. John Deaton. “With DE111-HS, we’ve cleared this hurdle. It mixes easily with liquid and still maintains a high count of colony forming units (CFUs) in the finished product.”

B. subtilis DE111 differs from most probiotic strains in its ability to produce protective spores. These spores can survive stomach acid and then “activate” under ideal conditions like those inside the human gut. An added benefit, DE111’s optimal growth temperature is 37°C, that of the human body, unlike other spore strains which grow better at lower temperatures.

Deerland Enzymes & Probiotics vice president of sales, Tod Burgess, notes “There is a booming interest in probiotics, and consumers want easier ways to nurture their health with these microbes—through what they eat and drink. With the help of DE111-HS, our customers have seen tremendous success in meeting this demand. They’re using it in innovative food and beverage products with greater ease in manufacturing.”

  • According to Nutrition Business Journal, probiotics grew 17% between 2015 and 2016. As the fastest growing supplement ingredient category, it had almost double the rate of growth of the second fastest growing category!
  • Regarding delivery systems, the 2016 gummy supplement market brought in a staggering $2.68 billion; a whopping 58% of consumers are looking for health benefits from their hot drinks according to Research and Markets; and Sloan Trends reports 18% of consumers are looking for functional benefits from their drinks.
“Research shows consumers want health benefits in tasty and pleasurable delivery formats. And DE111-HS makes this possible. Our clinical trials have shown DE111 supports a healthy gut flora, blood sugar and lipid levels, regularity, and improved sports performance,” Deaton points out.

To help nutrition companies examine the possibilities with DE111-HS, Deerland Enzymes & Probiotics has created three reports on the probiotic’s suitability for hot beverage, functional drink and gummy formulations.
